Hockey Equipment Tip: Ankle Guards

Ice Hockey Equipment Tip: Have you ever blocked a hard shot from the point only to have the puck nail you in the ankle? I feel your pain. Some players I know are afraid to block any shots for this very reason.

I always thought ankle guards were too heavy and would slow down my skating. I’ve never worn them. Then I saw Don Cherry on Coaches Corner going on about how ankle guards used to be heavy and bulky so players wouldn’t wear them. Now, with all the developments that have taken place in the world of protective gear, ankle guards are a fraction of the weight they used to be.

I don’t always agree with old, sour Grapes, but he seemed to be making sense. Obviously the Pro’s don’t wear them, but then again most Pro’s don’t even wear a visor. I wear a freakin’ cage! I might try a pair. Maybe I’ll end up blocking more shots?

Skate Mate's Max Pro Defenders.
The ankle cups provide protection from the side, as well as the front.

Do you, or anyone you know wear ankle guards? If so, let me know how they feel. Maybe Don is right on this one.
