NHL.Com Inside The Game Video Tips

If you’re just learning to play Ice Hockey, or looking for a refresher on some of the basic skills, check out these short video clips from Tampa Bay Lightning assistant coach, Mike Sullivan.

These 4 clips are part of the NHL.com Learning centre called Inside The Game. Unfortunately, you have to watch a lengthy intro before each clip and there’s no rewind control, just pause. Still worth it though.

Hockey Tips from Mike Sullivan

Pass Receiving
Receive a pass with your hands out front to cushion the puck.

Puck Protection
Keep your body between the player trying to check you and the puck.
Turn the opposite direction from where you feel the pressure.

Puck Control 1
Don’t handle the puck too close to your body. It will force you to keep your head down.

Puck Control 2
Roll Your wrists to cup the cup on your stick, so the puck doesn’t roll off your blade.

Howie Meeker Hockey School

Back in the 70’s Howie Meeker had a great show on CBC teaching kids how to play hockey. Famous Howie-isms like “Golly gee-whiz!” and “Pass the cotton pickin' puck!" in his patented squeaky voice and classic Canadian accent are still imitated dressing rooms today. Truly a legend.

19 episodes of Howie Meeker’s Hockey School can viewed at the CBC archives.

Even though the intro looks like a cross between a 70’s slasher movie and an episode of "Will it Blend?", the priceless 15 minute shows are as great for nostalgia, as they are for reviewing the basics.

Episodes Include:
Offence One-onOne
Deft Defence
Perfecting the Pass and Shoot
Skating with Power
Skate Matter
A new Season, New Skills
Make every Practice Count
Back to Basics
The Slapshot
Goalie Skills building
Checking the Forward
Smart Forechecking
Drills for Skills
Blue Line Stand
Stick Tricks
Puck Control and the Snapshot
The Right Equipment
Serious Stick-handling
Mobility on Skates
Perfecting the Pass
Believe it or not, Howie’s still at it - teaching Skills and Drills
